Woodcarving is done everywhere in Thailand, but the North, and especially Baan Tawai, a small city near Chiang Mai, is really famous for it. It has been one of the major cultural attractions in the Chiang Mai region with foreign and Thai tourist for many years.
You can find the village by taken the Chiang Mai - Hang Dong Road. Turn left at the traffic lights just as you enter Hang Dong Town and proceed for a further 3 kilometers. The village can be found on the right.
In Baan Tawai there are some good gift shops, handicraft furniture and wood factories. If you are interested in a particular genre of Thai craft, please let us know and we can find it for you.
